Crabbie's ginger beer is delicious and I will be trying more ginger beer in the future. Quite sweet, quite gingery. Image heavy post ahead!

2015.02.05 18:47 - Two days to IRS
The eagle has left the nest. Repeat, the eagle has left the nest.

A bunch of classes are cancelled. An assignment deadline was postponed. The mood is festive. Somebody is on a supply run for saran wrap, plywood, and buckets.

Off on a booze run later tonight.

Until then, pavements problem set.

2015.02.04 23:31 - wings wings wings
So I got to grill the Team Fusion candidates about the SLC MappedIn ipad-kiosk-moneypits. So you have a capital improvement fund specifically for the building and you can't think of anything to do with it but blow 40k on interactive maps??? For people too shy to ask where the gender neutral washrooms and food bank are? And room purposes change? The utility of that is still not worth 40K, especially since he seemed to think these were just a 3-year investment! Not to mention maintenance! You could slap a huge ass map on two walls of the SLC, replace the room labels every six months, and it would still be more cost effective. It would have been better if it was an apology but nopppppeeeeee some bullshit about efficiency audits. Dude this isn't an efficiency thing it's just piss poor decision making. Then they said the board vote was unanimous for kiosk installation and then a guy at the back (also running for VP-IN) commented that no, it wasn't unanimous, because he was a dissenting vote. Heh.

Also some tomfoolery about the new scheduling software Infosilem but I'll post about that later.

Food after the meeting was wings, by the way. Also scored a huge amount of end-of-day C&D soup. Good thing split pea and ham looks unappetizing. Tastes good though. I wonder if this bowl in the office is clean and microwave proof?

It drew my attention to my clear lack of qualifications.

Really, thinking of an independent study to undertake - whether a work term report or science fair project - is one of my least favourite parts of academia. I'd rather propose design solutions than investigate new technologies.

The MASc might not be right for me.

I also couldn't think of any profs that I would feel comfortable asking for a reference letter.

I don't know... I'm used to being nearly the best. But I lack actual research experience and that disqualifies me from elite academic paths. I'm not sure I'd actually want to go that way, but I feel uncomfortable without that door open.

Maybe an M.Eng.

2010.11.23 17:35 - XD
There's at least one spot of brightness in this pit three stories above the ground. I have acquired The Lord of the Rings: The Complete Recordings. Several years late, I guess, but everything sounds amazing...

Ding, dong, the plant is nearly dead.

2010.11.21 23:28 - 2.8 weeks later
No, not really. More like 2.2 weeks.

I finally feel like I have something more positive to post than whining about being a burnout and how I should have gone into math. So, since I've been very productive this weekend and have got 18/19 pages of my second - final - draft hammered out, as well as all three problem sets for next week, I'll try to give posting another go. The other two attempts to write anything turned out to be 1) a long, whiny AU fic about my life and what would have happened if I'd joined PEG when I was in fifth grade, and 2) a suitably evasive facebook note lifted from a friend IN LOVE ladidadila. Well, I'm very happy for him, since he's been dating that girl for... years. He's very conservative by both axes, she'd be conservative in at least one if she cared. Their TRU WUV is so bloody sickening.

Anyways dude boy liked his gum, earphones, and mushroom very much (this was two weeks ago). I'm really glad it went well; it's been a long, long time since I've bothered to buy anyone a present. Like, eighth grade.

I'm still catatonic in 70% of my lecture hours, so that's not good. Only because skipping everything is a very slippery slope. It's a confidence thing, I guess, somehow. No idea what the hell the physics prof is saying anyways (onomatopoeia: "gibbering"). So I brought back a certain Fundamentals of Physics and Calculus: Early Transcendentals. I only wish I had a copy of the Mandrill-faced linear algebra book.

What else is up.

I developed a craving for Peggy Sue fics this weekend and so spent my time in the laundry room reading The Pendulum of Choice (NC17, Harry/a load of people). Essentially, Harry skips around different alternate universes after his own is devastated by Voldemort. Covers almost every Harry Potter AU concept I've read. It was awesome. I especially liked how an overarching plotline turned up by the end.

My roommate's plant revived itself. The bloody thing smells like rancid salad. I had to make another attempt on its life with the hot tea. I think the trick is to get all of its roots at once. In rotation, so that she doesn't notice it's suddenly on the wilt.

And then I underwent a paradigm shift between the beginning of the post and here thanks to SOMEONE, and now I have to go and bleach my eyes out.

That is all.

2010.11.06 00:47 - Breakers
The electrical panel for the floor is located right outside my room. The same bastards who pulled the fire alarm decided to get drunk and experiment with the breakers.

If I were an electrical engineer I could try something more interesting - for example, possessing their sound system - but I'm not.

On a plus note, I'd like to think my roommate's plant is wilting nicely.
