- James is wrong, Shelties (mini lassies) are not actually particularly inbred (breed-wide average COI of 6.7%). The COI represents how inbred a dog is. 25% is a father/daughter offpsring, and 12.5% is a a grandfather/granddaughter offspring. Rough collies (lassie dogs), however, are quite inbred (14.3%), possibly because of the movie. To put it into perspective the bull terrier and its weird forehead has an average COI of 14.8%, Australian cattle dogs and border collies are at about 4%, Havanese at 2.8%, and Foxhounds at 0%. Surprisingly dalmations only have a breed-wide COI of 5.3%.
