anyone can fall apart, let's fall together

Last night, friend of a friend reblogged this kimono project, tagged #racism, #exotification, and #behold white ignorance.

Background: I'm not white.

me: How is the tag "behold white ignorance" not also racist? It's like http://xkcd.com/385/.

her: You can't be racist towards white people (racism 101). I'm sorry I hurt your feelings.

me: Thank you for being considerate of my feelings, but could you explain further about how one can't be racist towards white people?

her: Next time, don't derail a post that calls out racism with your white feelings. And don't conflate it with sexism either.

me: I think we're quite on-topic, actually, although I don't have "white feelings'. My original point was whether it was necessary to use "white" with regards to ignorance. If the art student was any other ethnicity, would you have tagged it "behold asian ignorance", or "behold black ignorance"? <picture of the bottom half of my face posted here, in the style of todd in the shadows>

her: I don't even think you read through the post I linked you through. Yes, it really was necessary. Intra and inter POC racism/appropriation is another topic, which requires more nuance. Brush up on how white people's racism and all the harm that comes through that first before you try to equate that level of hegemony to the sort that comes from POC communities.

Rest of it under cut, because it's not as funny.

So anyways, I get the impression that the art student's kimono is particularly bad because she's white? I disagree since anyone with the unfortunate balls to try making a kimono like that is already self-confident enough to the point of feeling ok to skimp on research, regardless of what their ancestors did.

...? Talk to me.
