If I don't post this soon, I might never, which may be an improvement, but we'll never know now, will we?At a glance, Romeo and Juliet is thought to be the most-filmed play of all time and has twenty four opera adaptations. You might think it was easy for anyone to grasp the basic plot in which the two underage protagonists DIE or, in softer terms, have their relationship
interrupted by the end. But it somehow escaped Sylk, Taylor Swift, though thankfully Blue System issues the disclaimer that "I'm not your Juliet, and you're not Romeo".
Am I being too harsh in that the fact that everyone dies should only be a factor in epic sweeping plot-based ballads? Alright. For all I know, Sylk was right and R&J had nothing on their minds at the time except the mind-blowing sweaty sex they were about to have.
So that brings us to Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits. Granted, nobody dies, but at least the romance doesn't work out.
I very much like Romeo's portrayal. He's not a standin for the chosen projections of our imaginations. True to the spirit of the play, he spends his time trying to pick up girls in sketchy street corners.
Ah, screw it. I like this Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet" very much. I like songs that are about stories and not just general areas of emotions that the audience is supposed to project their own experiences into. I like that everyone's a little bit screwed up ("Romeo" lacks ambition and is a bit creepy, while "Juliet" is a girl with a dream bigger than getting Romeo, and probably intimacy issues she should get checked out.). I like that it references "My Boyfriend's Back" (thank you, Jersey Boys) and "A Place for Us" (thank you, Lynn), and maybe even "A Time for Us". I even like the texture of the the song.
And then I noticed that Bon Jovi used pretty much the section of the lyrics in "Always' ("I can't do (sing) a love song like that way it's meant to be", and the reference to loaded dice). And I love that song too. And the verse. And then they pop the bridge in and FUCK THAT UP, but compensate by putting Carla Gugino in the music video which doesn't actually fit with the lyrics.
Now your pictures that you left behind
Are just memories of a different life
Some that made us laugh, some that made us cry
One that made you have to say goodbye
What I'd give to run my fingers through your hair
To touch your lips, to hold you near
When you say your prayers try to understand
I've made mistakes, I'm just a man
When he holds you close, when he pulls you near
When he says the words you've been needing to hear
I'll wish I was him 'cause those words are mine
To say to you till the end of time
