Yep.
1. Astonishing X-Men - the Joss Whedon run. I figured I'd finish what I started at the MGCI library with Volume 1 - "Gifted". It was all right, I guess. It feels that Joss has always had some pacing issues with the comic... because really, it's all been done. Robot sentience. Comic book death. And what the hell was up with the Hellfire club? I enjoyed Scott Summer's turn of character when he lost his powers, but not whatever was going on with Emma Frost and her double, or Shadowcat and the baby she never had. There were probably better ways to explore their deepest, darkest fears. Plotwise, it was unnecessarily convoluted after the first arc. I'm not even going to get into what I think of Colossus/Shadowcat or Summer/Frost. I did enjoy Hank McCoy's struggle to retain his humanity, and the rapport between Logan and Hisako.
2. Y: The Last Man - Brian K Vaughn Again, I started this one last summer in the GHP library, with Volume 6 - Girl on girl and Volume 7 - Kimono dragons. Though I essentially skimmed through the 60 issues, it was good. I enjoyed the early exploration of a world at 50% population, particularly that of Marrisville, Ohio. Later plots about the How They Got Theres did NOT feel completely random. Halfway through, everyone started looking the same and I started getting confused with the names (Beth, Beth, and Beth?). In addition, I'd think that Alter would have found a better way to gain a diplomatic edge for Israel than by chasing the last man and his monkey. Nonetheless, I was close to tears by the end.
Dammit, I'm still missing issue 19. | |
