Mix: Coping Mechanism
Medium: General
Subject: Drinking
Title: Coping Mechanism
Warnings: References to drug use and suicide.
Notes: This is a story about a crappy night that gets worse. Inspired by, but ultimately unrelated to Questionable Content

Partial Commentary
Fed up with upbeat love-is-a-drug songs, I decided to compile the most depressing songs in my library that reference drugs, suicide, numbness, and the lot, and then order them to represent events in a night of drinking. This is not a mix about having a good stony time out with friends, or the moment where a good night goes bad. This is a story about a crappy night that gets worse.
FINALLY complete. I've had this sitting around for months. I'm not entirely happy with it - especially the last few songs - but it's as good as this gets.
Re: the title - I should have called it something more neutral and tasteful, but it was inspired by this comic.
Alternate cover art:

Didn't think it fit the mood, in the end.
Notes for individual songs -
01. Substitute "stiff drink" for "bitter song".
04. I thought she was singing "I'm old enough for you", but she wasn't.
07. Watching the music video, I only believe she's dancing on her own because she accidentally punched out everyone else on the dance floor.
08. The Killers vs Beethoven vs Angels & Airwaves
09. I'm not sure what this song actually means, but the general intent seems right.
10. From the House soundtrack.
11. Eleven minute song in the middle of the mix? SURE WHY NOT
12. This is Stevie Nicks' cocaine song.
13. "I caught you and held you and pushed back your fringe and swore undying loyalty." This is a duet but I prefer to think of it as the rantings of one very deranged person.
14. I had real trouble trying to get a breather song in here that exuded an air of clarity, loneliness, and hopelessness. This track could as well have been Heart - Alone or FM Static - Tonight. But I suppose this is the song about the morning afterwards. "My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder". Also a great line.
15. Dr House is in the house, yo. This is the song about starting the above cycle over again.
16. The inspiration for everything.
01. A Bitter Song - Butterfly Boucher
All I need is a bitter song to make me feel better.
02. Satellite Mind - Metric
I'm not suicidal, I just can't get out of bed
03. Impossible - Shout Out Louds
I don't want to feel like I don't have a future
04. My Delirium - Ladyhawke
Can't operate, fired up, I won't eat and I won't sleep for you yeah
05. Hurricane Drunk - Florence and the Machine
I'm going out, I'm gonna drink myself to death
And in the crowd I see you with someone else.
06. Cover My Eyes - La Roux
Every time you leave with her, something inside me dies.
07. Dancing On My Own - Robyn
I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home.
08. The Adventure of Mr Brightside - DJ MikeA (Mike Alegre)
Now I'm falling asleep, and she's calling a cab...
But she's touching his chest, now, he takes off her dress, now, letting me go
09. Taste in Men - Placebo
Dazzled, doused in gin
Change your taste in men.
10. Walter Reed - Michael Penn
And make no mistake, I'm mad
'Cause every good thing I've had abandoned me.
11. Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb.
12. Gold Dust Woman - Fleetwood Mac
Is it over now?
Do you know how to pick up the pieces and go home?
13. New Art For The People - The Indelicates
Offered myself in the kitchen
Passed out on the floor
14. Lover, You Should Have Come Over - Jeff Buckley
Yes, and I feel too young to hold on
I'm much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb, and blind
To see the damage I've done
15. The Vicodin Song - Terra Naomi
I've got Vicodin, do you wanna come over?
I know it's a long drive from Malibu.
I got a pocket full of pills and not one lover
I'm feeling so good and so bad I don't know what to do.
Bonus: Need You Now - Lady Antebellum
Another shot of whiskey can't stop looking at the door
Wishing you'd come sweeping in the way you did before
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind
For me it happens all the time.
