Charly Burke

I'm actually really enjoying her character on The Orville...

On one hand, they didn't need a new ensign, or to write in all sorts of four-dimensional mcguffin problems that only she could solve. And it's weird that her actress is dating Seth McFarlane whilst being twenty years younger than he is.

However, I respect the way the show is handling Charly's hostility at Isaac following Amanda's death. It's a bitter, necessary pill to swallow. Not everyone is on board with Isaac's presence on the ship. The Kaylon attack was three years ago for the viewers, but for the crew only a few months have passed. It's not pretty, and the ensign occasionally comes off as surly and unlikeable - at one point, Ed accuses her of acting like she has a "monopoly on grief." Those jagged edges are necessary for Charly's character.

I hope the ensign sticks around.

I'm no longer on vacation

Ya boy is back

It was sort of a mini vacation. I wore smashing dresses, ate omakase sushi (my favourite was the sea urchin/tuna tartare, the monkfish liver, and the bonito), and got new earrings.

I'm now on Ghost Story in the Dresden Files.

I've begun writing That Interquel (which will not exceed 20k words).

Tonight, I watched Lasting Impressions in Season 2 of the Orville. It's another episode where not much happens (much like the season opener Ja'loja, which I loved). I'm aware that it's real similar to several episodes of Star Trek. Still found it very touching, at least partially because I've felt similar infatuations. Not with holodeck ladies environmental simulations, but they honestly might as well have been.

Also it had this scene:

pen15

Yesterday, I biked 50 km (to GC91Z00, then Guelph Lake, then back) and painted my nails (Morgan le Fay + Because You're Worth It = champagne).

Today, I'm was really itchy, had a bubble bath, and remained itchy. Watched Bon Cop Bad Cop in the afternoon. Started watching pen15 and reading Dead Beat in the evening. Lost my mind at about 10pm and ate a bowl of yogurt and some chicken nuggets. Pen15 is very good and accurate to the time period, although I don't recall my adolescence being quite like that, nor do I remember my peers being so small. Krogoth is not a fan, probably because despite what his freakishly slim and shapely legs say to the contrary, he was never a teenage girl.

Tomorrow I'll probably clean the bathroom.

On Tuesday I'll probably watch The Green Knight because the trailer imagery and the source material are both extremely up my alley.

Frakkkkkkk

Okay so I had a dream about this girl I'm acquainted with. But it was exactly that kind of dream. We were working in this post-apocalyptic factory, made out on a grotty futon, and then she told me that she loved me, and I just totally froze up. Didn't know what to do. Just kissed her and skedaddled.

After that I dreamed I was rampaging through a haunted gift shop in Skyrim. Shot some flaming arrows at a frost troll. Glitched through a wall (read: found the maintenance access) and then bought a small daisy-embroidered handkerchief and a square blue ornamental glass dish.

AND THEN. Admiral Cain from Battlestar Galactica was organizing war games in what looked like a Megabuilding from Dredd, and we all know that Admiral Cain doesn't like to lose. Things got all intense until it wasn't a game anymore. Admiral Cain started sending teams of marines through the door and threatening us over the intercom.

My squad - composed of Colonel Osama bin Tigh (who should be good at this small force vs bigger force stuff!) and Roomba (of all people!!!) began to mount a defense, but just when things were getting interesting, and we'd planted all the explosives and ransacked an armoury, I woke up.

So just FML.

I got promoted!

Yay! And, just a few weeks til my designation finishes processing...

I have some new creative pursuits on the horizon.

First of all, the BSG finale WRECKED ME BIGTIME. I started crying when the opera house dreams started aligning with the present, except that everyone was wearing TACTICAL VESTS and I couldn't handle the CONTRAST and the SOUNDTRACK and then ughhhh

AND THEN THEY FOUND EARTH, and a bunch of main characters died, another main character clearly hasn't got much time left! And then the characters I was rooting for this entire time got such a MESSY ending, and I guess toilet paper isn't even going to be invented for another hundred thousand years??

So I sobbed messily for half an hour after the end credits rolled while Krogoth ordered sushi. Which is EXACTLY the sort of reaction that four seasons of TV should wring out! So don't misread me here - I don't care that the last season veered from SPACE SURVIVALISTS to RELIGIOUS ROBOTS and then ROBOT MARITAL COUNSELLING, because when the finale hits like a frakking truck I WILL FORGIVE ALL THOSE SINS but also I will cry about it.

AND THEN, because I can't find that angsty post-canon Lee/Kara fic, I guess I'm gonna have to write it myself

Second order of business is to get my act together and really get the 5e space campaign rolling.

But, story first. Really.

Commode

Why is it whenever I dream of public toilets, they're either out of service, dirty, or don't have working doors??

Must I live in terror that Gaius Baltar is going to jump out from behind the sink? Or that the opposing stall door will slowly swing open, revealing Starbuck as she peruses a magazine?

Please, say it ain't so.

check out time

I dreamed that I'd booked a hotel room in the midwest for a conference. My friend had joined me for the last night - they were passing through on a trip of their own, after their reservation fell through. Nothing untoward happened that night, because they're a chivalrous type. In the morning, I made hotel room coffee and we drank it on the balcony. Check out time came and went. And I couldn't stop thinking - why did I wait? Why didn't I do anything?

Just watched E2S10 of BSG and holy shit, I was warned it was a three parter, but now I have to watch the other two otherwise I won't be able to fall asleep tonight, or read the episode synopses on wikipedia. Can only imagine how it must've been when the series was first airing on TV.

Ahab (or, whatever happened to Clover Canyon?)

This is the story of my love affair with Clover Canyon.

Five years ago, I was looking for a dress at the Marshalls at Yonge and Gerrard five years ago, for my convocation. It came down to a choice between the Winter Solstice and the Irish Box dresses, though I did not know them by that name yet.

As much as I liked the feeling of staring into a tentacled floral abyss on the front of the Winter Solstice dress, the back did not inspire the same feelings. Also true blues remind me of my grade 10 high school ID photo where I looked like a drunk 23 year old man. Blue just does not play nicely with my complexion.

Blathering about tight dresses  )

Oh, yeah, and then Justin brought wings home and coincidentally we'd reached the Wingsluts episode of our Brooklyn Nine Nine rewatch.

And Fleabag was excellent, as my boss said, but not depressing, as she also said it was. It's just really sweet. Don't know if I hate the Godmother, Umbridge, or Shivani's elderly halfling cleric more.

Aquarium babies

I was rearranging rocks in my tank and I saw a BABY EMBER TETRA about 8mm long. I may have accidentally killed it when I was poking around the tank, but the presence of fry means the fish are happy! Tetras aren't like guppies or cichlids, they're egg-scatterers so it's generally harder to get them to breed.

In other news I think my hygro has a potassium/magnesium deficiency :/  I've upped the tap in my tap/RO mix so hopefully it works out. Can't wait until the plants fill in so I can ditch the hornwort. Damn thing triples in size every week, and is constantly full of snails, and the tank looks SO MUCH BETTER without it. But I keep it around because it sucks the poop out and prevents me from overdosing ferts.

Having a lot of trouble with my next chapter because nothing happens, but I couldn't just LEAVE a bunch of temporary emotional loose ends lying around. Dang thing is 63k words long now. Wondering if it'll break 70k, because I haven't even touched the last chapter yet.

(Sun)day drinking

This weekend:

- Yoshi puked on my glasses.
- I finalized my favourite chapter of Once More with Pharaohs
- Justin and I finished a playthrough of Divinity 2
- Scully got abducted and unabducted on the X-files
- I need to get my update schedule in order and put chapters 13/14 (out of 17) out for beta.
- I think I'm going to start a playthrough on tactical difficulty for Divinity 2
- Need more red plants for the aquarium, I'm thinking AR mini. I like to get my livestock/plants from angelfins because it's local, they've got the best selection of in-vitro plants in a 50km radius, and none of the fish I've gotten there have died themselves dead yet.

NO HANDS

I dreamed I was a grad student again, being hosted in a foreign country by a host family. With me was another grad student. I flirted with him, unsuccessfully. Then I ran errands with dude boy, who was also a grad student. We got lost around a street that looked like Warden and Huntingwood, near the Tim Hortons where I stopped at for a donut once, on a bike. When I got home the host parents had chopped the other grad student's hands off. It was not good.

Riverdale - episode 1

Ever since Archie comics shook off the Hays comic code they've been doing some interesting things, chiefly Afterlife with Archie, but now also Riverdale. I have some small thoughts about episode 1 - river's edge:

- I like the casting! Veronica (Camila Mendes) is an excellent pick, for sure and she has the best material this episode. Archie (K. J. Apa) looks like a slightly younger Andrew Garfield and Betty (Lili Reinhart) looks like Heather Morris from Glee. I guess it's worth mentioning the cast diversity, relatively speaking. On paper everyone (except Chuck and Nancy) look white as mayo, but Josie and the Pussycats are clearly set up as Destiny's Child, Reggie and Dilton are now the Cool (douche) Asian and Asian Nerd respectively, and Veronica is now Latina. So, this is very cool!
- That being said I still think it's very weird for actors in their 20s (... Cole Sprouse) to play 15 yr olds. Is it normal for 15 yr olds to be ripped?
- It's also very odd that Miss Grundy looks nearly the same age as the students... and I can't believe she's in that romance subplot. Squick. What the hell?
- the dialogue is pretty stylized, but after all, Riverdale is more Brick than Mean Girls. This is not a bad thing.

My personal predictions, which i will update as time goes on:
- Betty is going to go completely off the chain by the end of the season, out of stress, and... extenuating plot factors that force her to grow a backbone. Also, I can't see her accepting what Archie was up to that summer.
- Miss Grundy is going to die.
- It's jarring that Kevin acts so flamboyant in an adult way at the tender age of 15. IDK it felt a lot more subdued when Kurt in Glee was camping it up. I wouldn't be surprised if they reveal that Kevin did the wild thang for the first time when he was 13, is extremely traumatized on the inside, and pulls a Brandon from Easy A. And dies.
- Cheryl didn't commit the murder. That's too obvious. But they're definitely incest twins. That's a known fact. She is going to survive and be very unhappy.
- Veronica is going to die, because she's currently my favourite character. And she's not really reformed right now.

Fic: Scenes from an accidental courtship (SG-1)

Title: Scenes from an accidental courtship
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Pairing: Sam/Daniel
Categories: Friendship, romance
Length: 25k
Warnings: None
Summary: "No, not that way. We were really, really good friends." And maybe just a little bit more. Season 7 behind-the-scenes friendship and romance.

Link

What I thought:

OH MY GOODNESS, I don't think I've had so many FEELS to deal with since, like, Kirk/Spock.

This fic hits soooo many points for me. I didn't even know I shipped Sam/Daniel until I read this fic. But what do I know? When I started out reading HP fanfic I was only into canon pairings. And here, having only touched the tip of Stargate fanfiction, I thought that the SG-1 team members had the sexual chemistry of four pumpkins all spaced a polite distance apart from each other. I've tried a few shippin' fics already but none of them have really SOLD their pairings to me yet, y'know?

Well, the characterization of this fic is believable. Which makes the friendship component believable, and the friendship component of this fic is what makes it goes down smoothly. If the friendship aspects of the fic are believable, it's only a gentle slide down to being open to the romance aspects of the fic. But thank goodness the fic is only rated T because I might have not have been able to suspend my disbelief otherwise. Maybe another time, yes? But small steps first.

I also love way that Sorrel draws out the friendship aspect of the fic to add tension so that every time the romance aspect steps it up, I'm more than ready to accept it. Also, UST is delicious.

The last two paragraphs are a kick in the teeth. There is a sequel (Winter). I need a sequel between this fic and Winter in my life, but there isn't one!!!

Anyways I now find Sam/Daniel utterly obvious and natural and all other pairings are ruined for me temporarily.

Fic rec - Pieces tossed aside

Title: Pieces tossed aside
Fandom: Firefly
Rating: R
Words: 9230
Characters: Mal, crew. A touch of Mal/Simon and Kaylee/Jayne, although I would consider this genfic more than anything.
Summary: Paquin goes radio silent. Everything else follows. AU. Set after the TV series.

Link

Why I liked it:

This is the best apocalyptic Firefly fic I've ever read. In this fic, the apocalypse is quiet - where you watch worlds go silent, one at a time, and no news is bad news.

This fic is a perfect blend of despair and hope. By that, I mean it's mostly despair and any hope I picked up on was magnified by own denial about how bad the situation actually was. Also, the end was fantastically ambiguous. I want a sequel but Pieces tossed aside is perfect the way it is.

Stargate SG-1 - Season 3.

Same deal as before.

1 - Kind of an iredeemably rubbish episode.
2 - A bit rubbish but with at least one sufficiently cool part.
3 - A solid episode.
4 - A memorable episode, in a good way. I have a bad memory.
5 - Personal favourite

expand table )

Conclusions
- About the same as Season 2
- The Tok'ra and the Tollan can't be trusted
- Which must be why the Asgard never go running to them for help.

Stargate Season 1 - all episodes

Thought I'd note down some thoughts about each episode here. All ratings are out of 5.

1 - Kind of an iredeemably rubbish episode.
2 - A bit rubbish but with at least one sufficiently cool part.
3 - A solid episode.
4 - A memorable episode, in a good way. I have a bad memory.
5 - Personal favourite

expand table )

Conclusions
- Season 1 was pretty hit-or-miss (hit-and-miss?) inconsistent.
- It does have some great moments but doesn't add much to either the plot, mythology, or character development.
- The horizontal stargate - cum - moon door is awesome.

Book of the Stranger

I am so tired of getting blue balled by Game of Thrones.

--

Last night I dreamed about geocaching in Nunavut. There was a building built on the ice, and I broke the ice, and it sank into the lake, but before it sank, I salvaged as much of Paul's rope as I could. Then I requested the cache archived. A very, very fuzzy cat popped out of a birdhouse. There was a massive multi-vehicle collision. I drove a red pickup truck southeast to rescue Sweet Boy from something. Of course the truck was red.

Scandal, S01E02: "Dirty Little Secrets"

Solid episode. Yell count at laptop-cum-television: 4. Gasp count: 3. I'm not sure that having seen a hooker over twenty years ago is an instant disqualification for a supreme court appointment, but what do I know about America?

As much as I know how many roads a man must walk before he becomes a man. Or what Jesus would do. Or what Batman would do. Or how paranoid one should be.

Well, for the last one, we look to FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder.
